Well said! All of the other isms have very specific characteristics for how people can be discriminated against. Racism, discriminate against race, sexism, discriminate against someone’s gender (usually female), homophobia discriminates against someone’s orientation, classism discriminate against someone’s social status and so on…

But when people say pretty privilege, they don’t have an actual specific definition of what makes someone “pretty”. Recognizing that we live In a society that is organized by the principle that whiteness is elevated about all else, brings into focus the various systems of oppression intersect to provide some advantage for people based on their features. Simply calling it “pretty privilege” obscures what those systems of oppression are.

I enjoyed this a lot. “Pretty privilege” is just idiotic watered down term simple minded ppl use. But it’s really just featurism, colorism, antiblackness, classism etc things at play

“Pretty privilege” I did not even know this was a term. How interesting.

The term itself annoys me instantly because of course I see it as a way for certain people to use this as a way to deflect the broader conversation privilege, so now they have a ‘woe is me’ I suffer from my privilege too narrative. Eye roll 🙄

Thank you for teaching about a term that is circulating around. Congrats on your first post @Kaye

Exactly, when exploring the topic on social media I noticed it sparked so much emotion when people pointed out how the privilege wasn’t exactly the cause for their harms. I just hope everyone uses the correct language moving forward. Thank you so much for reading, and I’m so glad you enjoyed!! 😊 ☺️☺️
